From your kitchen table, honestly
How to start an online business with no money
You can start an online business with almost no money. You cannot start one with no time and no effort, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
The strategy with no capital is simple: sell before you build, get paid early, and let customers fund everything that comes next.
The workbook version of this guide
This page explains the thinking. The Launch Workbook makes you do it: seven modules with fields you fill in, saved as you go.
Sell your capability before you sell a product
Services need no capital. A product needs building, hosting, and usually a few months before it pays anything. If you have no runway, start by selling the thing you already know how to do, to people who already have the problem, at a price that reflects the outcome rather than your hours.
The service becomes market research you get paid for. After ten clients you will know exactly which part to turn into a product.
Prove demand for free
A landing page, a spreadsheet and forty conversations cost nothing but time. Post where your buyer already gathers, message people directly, and ask for a commitment: a deposit, a booked call, a signed scope. Track every reply in one sheet so you can see patterns instead of remembering the flattering ones.
Build the cheapest thing that works
Free tiers will carry you further than you think: hosting, a database, email, payments that only charge per transaction. AI tooling means you can build the first version yourself instead of paying a developer, which used to be the single biggest cost in starting online.
- ·Domain: the one thing worth paying for on day one
- ·Hosting and database: free tiers until you have real usage
- ·Payments: per-transaction fees only, no monthly cost
- ·Build: your own time plus AI tools, not an agency
Take payment early and reinvest it
Ask for money sooner than feels comfortable: deposits, prepaid packages, annual plans at a discount. Every dollar in early is a dollar you do not have to borrow, and a much stronger signal than any amount of encouragement.
Grow through channels you own
With no ad budget, growth comes from search, direct outreach and reputation. Write pages that answer the exact questions your buyer types, ask every happy customer for one introduction, and keep a weekly rhythm. It is slow for two months and then it compounds.
Common questions
What is the cheapest online business to start?
A service based on a skill you already have. Zero inventory, no build cost, and customers can pay you in the first week.
How long before it makes money?
A service can earn in weeks. A product usually takes two to six months to first meaningful revenue, which is why funding the product with service income works so well.
Do I need to quit my job?
No, and you probably should not until there is revenue. Eight to ten hours a week is enough to get to a first paying customer.
